How To Know If I’ve Got Enough Attic Insulation.

With temperatures dropping down to single digits this winter, home owners in the inland northwest are feeling the chill.  We know our furnaces and fireplaces create the heat, but how to we keep in that way and prevent our furnace from firing every few minutes?  Almost half of most home’s energy costs go to heating and cooling.  Keeping that conditioned air in your home is your insulations’ job.   Both wall and ceiling insulation make a big difference not only to the comfort level of your home, but also your energy bills.  Deep attic insulation can go a long way to preserve your heat during these Spokane and Coeur d’Alene winters.  Newer homes are typically built with 15 to 20 inches of insulation (depending on the type) creating an R Value of 49, which is the modern standard.  Your home inspector or energy auditor can tell you the type and the depth of your insulation in order to give you a good indication of how much you may want to consider adding to keep your energy bills lower and your home more comfortable.
